That light novel translation, it’s editing like that which really puts me off reading them, the Haruhi novels are the only ones I’ve seen so far that manage to avoid lines like that in general. It was still a fairly enjoyable read though, thanks for posting the link (and for the episode obviously).

I love this show.
However our friend Kirito has problem with himself. Truth is – he wants to have friends. He wants NOT to be alone. But his personality forces him to be alone all the time.
He cannot truly care about people around him. That’s because he thinks of himself being merely a soloplayer. Even if he is around people, his foolness and stupidity ends up in death of people. That forces him to “close” himself even more. He needs to know how to behave himself when he isn’t alone.
